"You cannot go through these elements without, obviously feeling something yourself.

You cannot be mercenary in this way because it will make you less of a photographer...

LIFE UNDER SHELLING

documents the struggle for survival of the people in Eastern Ukraine. Since 2014, a war with Russia has been raging. Life here is dominated by the front line, a death zone that extends around 30 kilometers from the trenches into the country's interior. The guns constantly shell along with the deafening explosions of the grenades. Those who could, fled. The elderly and the small local stores, found in every village, were left behind. Many paid for this decision with their lives, like the owner of the small school supply store, whose burnt books now lie in the ruins. Evgeniy, Viktor, and Valentina, barely survived instead. They were at home when the drones and rockets hit their houses, causing severe damage or complete destruction. By some miracle, they all survived, physically unharmed, but evidently deeply traumatized psychologically.Instead of focusing on shocking and violent images, "Life Under Shelling" uses a clear and aesthetic approach to show the terrible effects of war.

UKRAINE AT WAR

In 2023, the war in Ukraine continued its devastating course, putting the country under immense pressure. Cities like Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia remained heavily affected by attacks, causing great suffering among civilians. Despite the ongoing destruction and uncertainty, the Ukrainian population displayed remarkable resilience and unity. Many people actively engaged in rebuilding efforts, supporting each other in their communities, and maintaining hope for a better future. Photographs from this year capture the intensity of life amid war, serving as witnesses to friendship, courage, and the unwavering spirit to keep the hope for peace alive.

THE EARLY MONTHS: AN UNIMAGINABLE WAR

In March 2022, Kyiv experienced great turmoil in the early weeks of the war. Daily missile strikes shook the city. The streets, once lively, turned into places of destruction, where buildings lay in ruins and fear filled the hearts of the residents. Despite this chaos, a strong spirit of resilience emerged. Families held onto hope, welcoming newborns even as sirens wailed. The photo gallery captures these conflicting emotions—showing the daily struggles against the backdrop of conflict, while also highlighting moments of love and solidarity in difficult times.
